Dr. Korn,
I felt the need to let you know how disillusioned I am with your class COUN5334. I entered the class with great hopes of learning more about diversity. While I am learning about the subject, I do find that I am great constrained by the requirements in the course. For example, in responding to students we must use 2 references and follow the response guild lines you have set for each discussion if we want an "opportunity" for a full grade. These requirements I feel take out much of the creativity (and I don't consider myself an exceptionally creative person) out of the responses. You also set forth that we should not write in first person, though there may be situation where we can and we must use our best judgment. So we find out if our judgment is correct by looking at our grades? I think it would have been fair to answer the question directly.
I typically set aside 20 hours a week for a 4 credit graduate course. I try to be very disciplined in utilizing my time, (2 courses, full time job, family, and a 2 hours on the road each day to get to work) but have found that for this class I need to rework my thoughts on how much time I should set aside each week for this crazy class. I am spending 2 hours on a response (8 hours a week) that in other classes took a maximum of a half hour each. I going to attribute this to the different approach you have taken in this course. Starting next week I'll set aside an extra 8 hours for this course...here's hoping for a B.
This is the first time I have felt the need to send a letter such as this to an instructor. Further, because of the tyrannical (I know its not exactly true, but its the word I could come up with to describe the instructor) nature of the instructor I feel need some anonymity (I know I'm a coward; however I've spent too long on this issue already (need to get back to those responses!) and don't want to have a prolonged discussion about this issue with you in the course room) to protect myself.
Best Regards,
Disillusioned Student
